Plan B - Emergency Contraception
Levonorgestrel
Generic Plan B (Levonorgestrel 1.5mg) is an over-the-counter emergency contraceptive pill used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. Commonly known as the “morning-after pill,” it is most effective when taken within 72 hours (3 days) of intercourse, but works best within the first 24 hours. Levonorgestrel is a synthetic progestin that temporarily delays ovulation, preventing fertilization from occurring. It is not an abortion pill and will not affect an existing pregnancy.

How does it work
Levonorgestrel prevents pregnancy before it begins by temporarily interrupting the ovulation process:
- Ovulation Delay
• The hormone prevents or delays the release of an egg from the ovary. If no egg is released, sperm cannot fertilize it—thus preventing pregnancy. - Fertilization Inhibition (if ovulation is close)
• It may also alter cervical mucus and the uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to reach an egg or for a fertilized egg to implant—though this is not the primary mechanism. - Single-Dose Simplicity
• Just one tablet is taken—no follow-up doses required. Works best when taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex.
